Density, volume and cooking measurements

Volume and mass are different: converting between them depends on the material’s density.

A cup of water and a cup of flour occupy a similar volume but do not have the same mass. A reliable volume-to-mass conversion must specify the ingredient, its preparation and the measurement convention. The site intentionally avoids claiming one universal cup-to-grams factor for every food.
