Bits, bytes and binary storage units

Understand why storage capacity and connection speed often use different prefixes.

A byte is 8 bits. Decimal kilobyte (kB) is 1,000 bytes, while kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. Likewise, MB and MiB differ, as do GB and GiB. Network rates are commonly stated in bits per second; file transfer tools often report bytes per second. Convert the quantity as well as the prefix.

Important note

The calculation is performed locally from the listed unit definitions. Display results are rounded for readability; high-precision and regulated work should use the governing standard and appropriate significant figures.
